Giant Sheets of Dark Matter Detected

Discovery News - Feb. 22, 2008 — The most colossal structures in the universe have been detected by astronomers who tuned into how the structures subtly bend galactic light. The newfound filaments and sheets of dark matter form a gigantic features stretching across more than 270 million light-years of space–three times larger than any other known structure and 2,000 times the size of our own galaxy.

Because the dark matter, by definition, is invisible to telescopes, the only way to detect it on such grand scales is by surveying huge numbers of distant galaxies and working out how their images, as seen from telescopes, are being weakly tweaked and distorted by any dark matter structures in intervening space.

Concept art - Resistance: Fall of man 2

io9 - These paintings from the PS3 game Resistance: Fall of Man 2 make mayhem and alien invasions look downright gorgeous. We aren’t sure if that’s meant to be the Golden Gate Bridge in the image above, since the structure of the supports looks somewhat different, but if it is… San Francisco looks like it might take a pounding in this sequel. We’ve got a whole gallery of this beautiful art - here.

Terminator 4 - start of a new trilogy

Blockbuster Buzz - Also in today’s Variety is the news that Terminator 4, or Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins to give it its correct title, now has an official release date of May 22, 2009. Buried near the bottom of the report though is the first inkling that this new film will not terminate the series:Storyline is being kept under tight wraps, but plot is part of a planned three-picture arc that begins after Skynet has destroyed much of humanity in a nuclear holocaust.

Not perhaps the hugest surprise, given Hollywood’s desire to milk every franchise until its pips squeak, but with the inclusion of Christian Bale giving the new movie significant star weight this enterprise has the air of a fresh new start for the series after the comparative disappointment of Terminator 3 rather than the beginning of a long slow slide into direct-to-DVD purgatory.
