Sci-fi artists: Carl Critchlow

Thrud the BarbarianImage via Wikipedia

First time I stumbled upon Carl Critchlow’s work is about 7years ago when I was first introduced to Magic: The Gathering card game. MTG features a lot of famous and some less famous artists but Carl’s pictures were sticking out of the bunch.
Carl Critchlow is a British artist working in mainly in the field of science fiction comics. His fully-painted style contributed to Judge Dredd series such as Son of the Mean Machine and “Dredd versus Batman” adventure The Ultimate Riddle. He also worked with Pat Mills on the third book of the series Flesh, entitled Flesh III: The Legend of Shaman. He created Thrud The Barbarian’ while still in at art college, in 1981. He also worked on such titles as ‘Mean Machine‘, ‘Magic the Gathering‘, ‘ABC Warriors‘ and ‘Lobo‘.

I used information about Carl Critchlow found on Wikipedia and Lambiek.
You can also check out his online gallery at www.carlcritchlow.com.

That’s why I’m bringing you this article from E.E.Knight, pulp writer who writes his online journal - Bohemian Word Werks - and shares his experience and expertise with us:

Ask any editor, agent, or reader what really draws them into a story, and you’ll usually get some variant of “someone who is interesting caught up in a difficult situation.”

So how does a writer go about building a compelling character? It’s not so hard – if by “not so hard” you’re comparing it to juggling chainsaws or getting an IRS audit. But there are a few tricks of the trade we authors use to save us a whole lot of effort and readers thinking.
